Cities working on blueprints for future
From Falcon Heights to Woodbury, citizen input is being sought on housing, the environment, land use, transportation and other topics. Falcon Heights wants to create a way for pedestrians to safely cross busy Larpenteur Avenue. White Bear Lake is planning a trail system around its namesake lake, as well as considerably more housing for senior citizens. Woodbury foresees fewer large family homes and more diverse housing in the roughly one-third of the city that remains undeveloped. These are among the features of community blueprints being hammered out across the metro area, as cities draft comprehensive plans that will guide their development through the year 2030. It's a once-a-decade exercise, mandated by a state law designed to ensure the orderly development of the metropolitan area. ... But Maplewood has made "green'' a key feature underlining all future development, said acting City Manager Chuck Ahl. That includes preserving and connecting waters and woods, as well as being environmentally conscious in ways big and small. "It's not just in demanding that developers make their development greener,'' added Maplewood City Council Member Will Rossbach, ''but in the everyday activities that the city takes part in -- from patching potholes to the type of paper we use to the types of lightbulbs we put in city hall.''
