Our perspective

What we see depends mainly on what we look for. Sir John Lubbock

As free citizens in a political democracy, we have a responsibility to be interested and involved in the affairs of the human community, be it at the local or the global level. Paul Wellstone

January '08 Citizen's Forum Notes

Ms. Flister has provided her notes from the January 5, 2008 Citizen's Forum.

The subject of enterprise funds was discussed at length, both in general and with respect to Maplewood's ambulance service.

Ms. Longrie repeatedly argues that enterprise funds must break even or be profitable. Indeed the Copeland Council just raised ambulance fees by 21%, insisting that the ambulance enterprise fund must break even. At the Citizen's Forum councilperson-elect Nephew explained otherwise. (Here is the February 2007 Maplewood Voices report on enterprise funds).

During the discussion, Ms. Longrie brought up the letters from the State Auditor concerning the Maplewood Community Center enterprise fund, insinuating the letters were politically motivated. Since the letters were from Republican State Auditor Patricia Anderson and Ms. Longrie has been using them for political purposes ever since, we can only agree.
