Pioneer Press: 11/14/2007 12:08:37 AM: Elizabeth Mohr: Developer registers White Bear Lake land group's name with stateDenny Trooien beats land group to register its moniker

The group calling itself the Johnson Boat Works Historic Site Task Force went to register as a nonprofit organization last week.
But the name had already been taken - three days earlier - by a developer who had other plans for the site.

The task force and developer Denny Trooien of Dennis Properties were both vying for a land development in White Bear Lake, until the City Council on Oct. 23 approved a motion to work exclusively with the task force.

The former Johnson Boat Works property, just north of Whitaker Avenue between U.S. 61 and Lake Avenue South, is the land in question.

Trooien's maneuvering over the nonprofit's name is only the latest twist in a contentious fight over the future of the publicly owned lake property.

Sounds like Trooien copied Eric Hjelle's attempt to trademark "Maplewood Fire" for his insurance company.
