Clear Channel gets its way

On December 28, 2007, the morning after a special city council meeting called specifically to deal with their conditional use permit application (CUP), Clear Channel submitted a building permit application to raise by 15 feet their billboard on highway 36. The building permit was approved the same day.

Work on the sign began forthwith. The faces were removed, angled, and replaced; the post raised; and LED panels installed. Within a couple of weeks of approval we have this:

Clear Channel takes its authority to install this LED billboard from the October 22, 2007 special agreement with the city (amended December 28, 2007), which also calls for the Maplewood Community Center (MCC) sign to be replaced with a $100,000 LED sign. As of today, the MCC sign looks like this:

just as it has looked for many years.
