The Pioneer Press reports Mahtomedi Schools / District may drop one alliance for another
Mahtomedi is the latest school district to consider pulling out of a popular desegregation program.
A task force recommends that the district withdraw from the East Metro Integration District and team with North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale schools to form another collaborative with other suburban districts.
The Mahtomedi school board will vote on the decision Dec. 11. The Mounds View district also is considering joining the new collaborative.
The task force determined that EMID membership costs were high and that few Mahtomedi staff and students have participated in its programs. The group decided that Mahtomedi shared many goals with North St. Paul, so an integration partnership between the two would be beneficial.
Denise Waalen, Mahtomedi's assistant superintendent, said the district has 11 students attending two EMID schools and receives some staff-development training. Mahtomedi sends $187,000 of its $320,000 desegregation revenue to EMID each year.
