Sturzenegger is a true trailblazer
Information displays along a new paved trail honor Maplewood's most senior parks advocate. At 92, Emil Sturzenegger has seen a lot. But the past few months have brought some surprising highlights for Maplewood's most senior parks advocate. In February, the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners issued a resolution dedicating part of a Battle Creek Regional Park trail in Sturzenegger's honor. In April, he received the 2008 Minnesota Parks and Trails Council Award for his advocacy at the Legislature, which helped secure state funding to build the trail. He also received a certificate of recognition from Gov. Tim Pawlenty. And last week, the new information displays along the tree-lined trail paid him the highest honor. In the lower right corner are the words: "This section of the Lower Afton Trail is dedicated to Emil Sturzenegger -- area resident, avid walker and trail advocate.''
