Our perspective

What we see depends mainly on what we look for. Sir John Lubbock

Bruton endorses Kuehn for NSP Mayor

Previous North St. Paul mayoral candidate and former Maplewood Mayor Bob Bruton writes in a 6/5/08 Lillie Newspapers letter to the editor Letter: Support Mike Kuehn

The job of city councils is to set policy and direction. For example, a city may have a vandalism problem, and the council may define programs to address the problem. The job of city staff is to implement the policies and direction.

The job of the mayor is to serve as the figurehead for the city and to lead the council in setting such policy and direction. Mayor Bill Sandberg was a nice guy and a great figurehead for North St. Paul. Bill, however, was resistant to change because change always brings opposition. I ran against Bill for mayor 17 months ago because I was encouraged by many to give the community a seldom-offered alternative and because I felt that some change is essential in North St. Paul, especially in the downtown area.

I am not running for mayor in the special election because there are plenty of alternatives and I support Mike Kuehn. I have know Mike for over 35 years and worked with him in a variety of capacities. Mike has the necessary knowledge from serving on the council for 18 years, being a long time employee of the Metropolitan Council and attending many conferences on local government. He has proven his support for preserving neighborhoods and has a vision for downtown revitalization.

Please give Mike Kuehn your serious consideration for Mayor of North St. Paul.

Bob Bruton
North St. Paul
