Exciting, but expensive

Maplewood's Diane Longrie seems well on her way to becoming a million-dollar mayor ("Maplewood sorting out City Hall financial mess," March 26). Judgments against the city now total in the hundreds of thousands of dollars with potential for more. Wednesday's article referred to an interview with acting city manager Chuck Ahl about a list of financial problems and cited three specific financial responsibilities that had not been done under the watch of fired manager Greg Copeland. Longrie's response didn't mention specifics but rather said that Ahl's list was "smoke and mirrors" with political undertones. After having his integrity publicly trashed by the mayor, I'd guess that he, too, has grounds for a civil suit against the mayor and city. Having a million-dollar mayor is exciting stuff for Maplewood residents, but I'm not sure it's worth the cost.

Credibility crisis in Maplewood
Mayor Diana Longrie and Eric Hjelle are directly responsible for the Maplewood mess. Through their actions, such as 2 a.m. votes for unqualified city managers, they have destroyed the credibility and the financial stability of this fine city. I will make this plain and simple: Longrie and Hjelle need to resign, now. I am tired of people laughing in my face when I tell them I am from Maplewood. Get out of office and let the recovery process begin.
Bruce Estrem,
Maplewood
